The Arbor Hills Nature Preserve playground renovation project will provide construction plan services to replace the irrigation system around the parking lot and to replace the playground and connected features in accordance with the master plan created through resident outreach. The playground was installed in 1998 and the equipment can no longer be economically maintained and repaired. The playground drainage system is no longer performing properly, and the parking lot irrigation system is of the same age and is requiring increased maintenance to function as needed.
Construction design services include site survey, geotechnical investigation, construction, and site plans, as well as project bidding and construction administration. Planned improvements are in direct response to public requests and staff observations, maintaining the existing pavilion while providing a new accessible playground that includes seating walls, replacement subsurface drainage structures in the playground, new play equipment, stroller parking, improved walkway accessibility, irrigation, and tree planting. Irrigation in and around the parking lot will also be redesigned and replaced to achieve today’s efficiency standards.
The Parks and Recreation Department recommends approval of an expenditure in the amount of $215,755 for Landscape Architect professional services from Dunaway Associates, LLC for Arbor Hills Nature Preserve playground renovation. Dunaway Associates, LLC was deemed most qualified based on their Statement of Qualifications submission for RFQ No. 2021-0380-XR and their past efforts in master planning and community engagement for the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve playground master plan in 2024-25.
The benefit of this project includes updated playground equipment, replacement playground drainage system, improved walkway accessibility serving the playground, and an efficient irrigation system. If this project is not approved, the renovations will not proceed, and maintenance issues will persist with the playground leading to increased costs in maintenance or potential closure of features.
