BACKGROUND

This item provides for the approval of the pay plans for our fire personnel who fall under the State’s Civil Service program under Chapter 143 of the Local Government Code.  Per Chapter 143, it is a statutory requirement for the City Council to approve the number of positions for each classification (i.e. positions within the department).  It is important to note the number of classifications align with those approved in the FY 2020-21 Budget, which was approved by Council on September 14, 2020.

The effective dates listed on the Exhibit A follow the previous ordinance format with the overall effective date being September 28, 2020 due to it being the start of a pay period, and the number of positions effective October 1, 2020 in line with the fiscal year.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY/STRATEGIC GOALS

There is not a financial impact associated with this aspect of statutory compliance under Chapter 143 of the Local Government Code.

Approval of this item will support the City's Strategic Plan Critical Success Factor of being an Excellent, Innovative, and Accountable City Government.
