ITEM SUMMARY

To approve an increase to the current awarded contract amount of $325,900 by $195,945, for a total contract amount of $521,845, for engineering professional services for Water Rehabilitation Cross Creek East 3B, Project No. 7055.1, from Jones & Carter, Inc. for the Engineering Department; and authorizing the City Manager to execute all necessary documents. (Contract No. 2019-0122-X; Modification No. 1) Approved

PREVIOUS ACTION/PRESENTATION

On December 10, 2018, City Council approved an expenditure in the amount of $325,900 for engineering professional services for Water Rehabilitation Cross Creek East 3B, Project No. 7055.1 from Jones & Carter, Inc. for the Engineering Department.

BACKGROUND

The Engineering Department recommends approval of Contract Modification No. 1 for the increase in the engineering professional services agreement with Jones & Carter, Inc. in the amount of $195,945 for the Water Rehabilitation Cross Creek East 3B project.

Contract Modification No. 1 includes mitigating erosion along the trail in Hoblitzelle Park just south of the Cross Creek neighborhood due to excess storm water runoff from the neighborhood. The current storm water systems along the south side of the Cross Creek neighborhood are undersized, causing overflow into Russell Creek, resulting in escalating erosion along the trail and north bank of the creek.

This modification includes the design and construction plan set preparation for the addition of a new drainage system on the south side of the Cross Creek neighborhood (Part 1) to capture storm water overflow, and the analysis, design, and construction plan set preparation for an erosion control system adjacent to the Cross Creek neighborhood along the north bank of Russell Creek (Part 2). This modification will help alleviate erosion in Hoblitzelle Park that is creating safety concerns for the adjacent trail system and neighborhood.

If this contract modification is not approved, continued erosion and undersized drainage systems will cause safety concerns for residents adjacent to Hoblitzelle Park in the Cross Creek neighborhood, resulting in continued maintenance costs and a reduction of the quality of life for residents.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY/STRATEGIC GOALS

Funding for this item is available in the 2020-21 Water CIP.  The first modification to the existing design services contract, in the total estimated amount of $195,945, will leave a current year balance of $7,145,885 for future project expenditures.

Approval of this item will support the City's Strategic Plan Critical Success Factor of being an Excellent, Innovative, and Accountable City Government.
