Ordinance No. 2021-8-12: To amend Ordinance No. 91-2-9, codified as Chapter 2, Administration, Article XIII, Cultural Affairs Commission, of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Plano, Texas to revise the name of the Cultural Affairs Commission to the Cultural Arts Commission; amending Sections 2-251, 2-252, 2-254, and 2-256 of Article XIII, Chapter 2, Administration, of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Plano; and providing a repealer clause, a severability clause, a savings clause and an effective date. Adopted

In 2018 during the 5-year Board & Commission Review process, then Council Members Angela Miner, Rick Grady, and Ron Kelley commented on the exemplary work the Cultural Affairs Commission had been pursuing. During this review process, one constructive critique arose: how are we getting the message out to people?

Having just revised our Mission and Goals and beginning to tackle a major review of the arts and events applications, then commissioners set aside contemplating “getting the message out” for future appointees to take into consideration.

Current commissioners took up the mantle in 2020, benchmarking sixteen other Texas cities and counties, assessing what was trending and what would support both the commission’s mission and goals and the vision and Critical Success Factors established by City Council.

Commissioners unanimously agreed that a name change from Cultural Affairs to Cultural Arts is a step in the right direction. Therefore, I request by the attached ordinance, approval to make this name change on all relevant documentation and media.
