The name change is requested to improve customer experience by decreasing confusion with the Oak Point Recreation Center just two miles away. It is not uncommon to have park visitors, facility renters, special event guests, and deliveries show up at the recreation center rather than The Oak Point Park Nature and Retreat Center. The opposite happens as well; people looking for the recreation center show up at the Oak Point Nature and Retreat Center, despite efforts to inform and educate the public of the location of each.
The name change will also better align with the facility’s current function and business operation. At the time the facility was first named, the building was envisioned to be the “gateway” into the park, a nature center that would educate people about the park’s natural features and history. The park was the focus. Although this information is still made available, due to demand, the facility has transitioned into more of a venue for weddings, retreats, corporate and business meetings, and social gatherings. During these special occasions, the facility itself is the focus, with the park providing captivating views and a stunning natural backdrop.
The name change must be approved by a simple majority vote of the City Council members present at the meeting.
